Special Porridge

Saturday morning, breakfast time.

In an attempt to break away from their usual favourite breakfast of half a bagel with peanut butter (AND jam on Daddy’s shift), plus a token handful of cereal, I’ve made bircher muesli. Well Boy A made it.

It contains all of their favourite things:

300g Oats (they love porridge, especially Pink Porridge – will come back to that another day)

400g Apple juice (they would breathe juice if I let them)

10tbsp Yogurt (Boy O is a yogurt fiend. His current catchphrase is “Mummy, yogurt. Get it. NOW”)

Raisins (they’re essentially sweets, right?)

Sunflower seeds (they won’t notice them, surely?)

This has to be the easiest thing to make. Ever. Boy A weighed the ingredients (which do not have to be exact so I really could leave him to it), he poured them one by one into a big Kilner jar and stirred it all together with a big stick. That’s it. We left it overnight to soak up and voila.

Daddy loves it. Boy O isn’t impressed with it and won’t eat even one mouthful. Boy A says it’s stodgy, so we add a little milk at the table. Apparently it’s “fine”. But “apricot flavour would be better”.

nb. We’ve had lots of fun trying out other flavours – replacing the raisins and sunflower seeds with other things we fancy. And Boy A is right – Apricot, coconut and honey is delicious. Even Boy O doesn’t spit it back out.
